Renting a Scooter on Corfu: Advantages & Disadvantages

  1. Flexibility: Scooters provide a high degree of flexibility when it comes to exploring the island. They can easily navigate through narrow streets, making it easier to access hidden gems and picturesque spots that might be less accessible by cars.

  2.  Parking:  Parking in Corfu is difficult to say the least.  The past few years with an increase in tourism, there inevitably has been a huge increase in cars.  With a scooter you will be able to find parking basically everywhere.

  3. Cost-Effectiveness: Renting a scooter is often more cost-effective than renting a car or using taxis for short-distance travel. You’ll save on fuel costs, and scooter rentals typically have lower daily rates compared to cars.  Our scooters get 2.4 liters/ 100 KM. A car will get more than double that! So the amount of money you will save in gas alone is eromous.

  4. Quick and Convenient: What to stop for a quick coffee? or to take a quick picture?  Well imagine with a car.  You will have to find parking and by the time you do the sunset will be gone or too much time will be wasted so you won’t even bother.  With a scooter bam bam you are back on the scooter getting to your original destination.

  5. Experience the Local Culture: On a nice cool summer evening there is nothing more enjoyable then letting the wind blow on your face riding a scooter around the villages.  All the natural green makes it for a once in a life time experience.  There are even experiences just for that.  Groups of people renting scooters and driving around the villages, beaches and nice views. 

Disadvantages/things to be cautious about

  1. Wear Safety Gear: Always wear a helmet, closed-toe shoes, and appropriate clothing when riding a scooter. Helmets are mandatory in many places, and they provide essential protection in case of accidents.

  2. Know the Local Traffic Rules: Familiarize yourself with Corfu’s traffic rules and regulations. Drive on the right side of the road, obey speed limits, and adhere to local traffic signs and signals.

  3. Inspect the Scooter: Before you take off, thoroughly inspect the scooter for any damage or issues. Make sure the brakes, lights, and tires are in good working condition. Report any concerns to the rental agency.

  4. Drive Cautiously: Be cautious when driving, especially if you are not experienced with scooters or are unfamiliar with the local roads. Avoid aggressive driving and take extra care on winding or steep roads. There are many cars on the road in Corfu with locals and tourists. Always pay attention becuase the car drivers have protection the car. You on a scooter only have the helmet.  The roads are also pretty bad in Corfu with many pot holes and cracks.  So always watch out because these can be quite dangerous.

  5. Stay Sober: Never drink and drive. Alcohol impairs your judgment and reaction time, making accidents more likely. Corfu has strict penalties for drunk driving.

  6. Secure Your Belongings: Use the scooter’s storage compartment or bring a small bag to secure your belongings. Be cautious of pickpockets in crowded areas.

  7. Keep an Emergency Kit: Carry a basic emergency kit with items like a first-aid kit, a map of the island, and emergency contact numbers. It’s better to be prepared for unexpected situations.

  8. Stay Informed About Weather: Check the weather forecast before heading out on your scooter. Rain or strong winds can affect road conditions, so plan your trips accordingly.   Right after a rainfall the roads are the slippest so keep note. 

  9.  50cc:  With a 50cc a drivers license for a car is only necessary.  However, for many hills in Corfu , a 50cc will have difficulty getting up if there are 2 people on the scooter.  A 125cc will have no problem, however you need an A class license to rent.
  10. Ask for a phone holder: It is very easy to get lost, so a phone holder telling you where to go will make your life a lot easier.
